Go Slow
As the pace of activity in modern life has increased, there have been
consistent theories about the way people should stop and go slow. 'To take a
break from daily lives' or 'take time out for yourselves' may be
some of the things management coaches and psychologists say. Times
of India has today, in fact, come out with a half page print story proposing
people to slow
down.
Say No
The other theory, on the same lines, is of saying
no. Umpteen management books have again charmed readers by asking them to say
no to work. If you're loaded with work and another to-do comes up, say no. If
you don't exactly know how to get a job done, that has recently been assigned
to you; say no. Or if you've been assigned a task you haven't performed before,
say no. (Books don't out rightly articulate the say no part, but dumbing down
their theories exactly gets us to say no).
Hell Yeah, Move Quick
The way i see it, nobody ever made it real big, by
going slow or saying no. People get appealed to things that give them a
strategy/ license to do what they would ordinarily not be allowed to do. For
e.g. give a Delhi-ite a license to buy alcohol on a dry day. It's like a short
cut; everybody likes them. You get late to pay a bill; you are still allowed to
pay, by giving extra charges. You have an international trip coming up and your
passport has expired; there is a tatkal scheme.
Of course the 'go slow, say no' theory applies to
a few sections of society and to people stuck in certain circumstances;
like you'll obviously tell a 90 year old 'hey, go slow'. But on an average, i
think the 'Go Slow' and 'Say No' theories have been over emphasized and overly
believed.
I think if as a nation or as a society, a culture
or as any group (irrespective of age and
demographics), if we want to grow faster, be more developed, more
productive and achieve more, we need more of the 'hell yeah, move quick' spirit
people. We need more people to ask for more work, more people who think of
solutions and not problems, more people who take work that’s interesting to
them and then think of exactly how they’ll get that work done, people stupid
enough to think everything is indeed possible, people spirited enough who get
charged with success and more charged with failure, people driven enough to
believe that great work brings victory and luck is a non-entity.
Nice Blog, but on a different tangent i have a another view on your conclusion.. this whole idea of slow movement is for people who have been running fast for a long time and missing the blessings of going with decent flow.. Ofcource going slow doest apply to people who are not even walking.. :)
ReplyDeleteNice piece Karan...however, I feel that there needs to be a balance here as well, like mostly every other thing in the nature. You may want to move quickly with certain things, but it's a good idea to slow down and give yourself time to breathe with certain others. If you keep running all the time, it is not guaranteed that you will reach your goal faster - you may just burn out before you touch the finishing line :)
