Last month
I had the opportunity of being at the Evernote Trunk Conference 2012 in San
Francisco. Among all other things, the one thing that really stood out for me
was what Mr. Phil Libin, CEO at Evernote, had to say about entrepreneurship.
He mentioned that usually the way people think
about business ideas or evaluating them, was looking at the need their business
was satiating. However, the number of people who could actually do that was
very few. He built Evernote from a personal need, that he figured could be the
case with others too, .i.e. remembering things. As their business has been
growing, he wanted to optimize Evernote (the product) for his business, hence
came the idea of Evernote Business (their new product). He figured, his growing
business needs could be the same as that of others too, and hence they've now
built the product.
I thought this to be really insightful. The
learning was that entrepreneurs or prospective entrepreneurs need to think of
some product or service they're really unsatisfied with in their lives, and if
they could do something to improve that thing, that could be their business
idea! That's because if you're unsatisfied with something, the probability that
they're others like you is immense.
Please Note: Evernote is a client of mine, but this post only reflects my personal thoughts on this event and subject; and is not influenced by my employer or client.
