Why do CEOs tweet and why CEOs across industries should hop onto Twitter?

There are a large number of global CEO’s who’re tweeting regularly and an even larger number locally that are hopping on to the bandwagon. I did a bit of secondary research on why and how these global CEO’s tweet and here are few responses:

Richard Branson, Virgin group chairman:
“I'm regularly asked what a day in the life of Richard Branson looks like, and Twitter helps me answer that. It also enables communication no matter where I am; thanks to Virgin America's wifi (fleetwide starting in June), I recently lost my Twitter interview virginity at 35,000 feet.”

Guy Kawasaki, Alltop CEO

“I only deal with tweets that mention my name or my company's name plus direct messages.”

Jack Dorsey, Twitter Chairman

“It's the fastest and best way to get feedback on what we're doing, how we're doing it, and what we should do next, both from users and my co-workers. Speaking to the latter point, Twitter makes our company feel smaller and more cohesive. There is something to be said about sharing the small details of your life with those you work with daily.”

Enlisted below are the reasons why CEOs are tweeting and why the one’s that don’t should start immediately:
1.     CEO’s are a brand in themselves – when brands talk people take notice
2.     CEO’s have a huge following – from their current and previous organizations to other professional relationships
3.     Tweeting will help CEO’s have honest and unfiltered feedback to their company decisions, product/ service launches etc
4.     Questions may arise about the longevity of twitter, but as of now, it’s a great tool for CEO’s to network with other well known people across industries
5.     CEOs can leverage their followers base in times of need to make vocal their opinions on a latest stance by the company, any controversy the company may be engulfed in or if the CEO himself may be in a soup [for eg; Mark Hurd, ex-HP could have used it to garner and influence public opinion – the way Michael Phelps the sportsperson used it post his involvement in the drugs scandal]

Currently the CEOs that are actively tweeting are in the tech space but CEOs and senior management across industries in India should understand the importance of this tool and use it to good effect.
