According to a recent report from Experian Marketing Services, a digital marketing firm, more people are banking on the internet to decide their travel plans. "... the current traveler is more than ever reading and sharing travel-related content online, which has been created and posted by peers rather than by travel service providers," the report said. The findings are based on Experian Hitwise -- an online competitive intelligence service -- that reports on over 200,000 sites and over six million search terms.
The findings are nothing new, but it’s good to have the general consensus be reiterated by this report. For anyone who had a hunch of this happening over the years, making a travel app for tablets, which is totally the Gen-next PC category is a brilliant thing to do. And TripAdvisor has done this. Built using augmented reality technology, the new functionality allows travelers to take a virtual walk through their travel destination with nearby places superimposed over Street View from Google. To give an idea of the number of people using tablets, here goes a statistic – Apple has sold more than 17million iPad’s in the last 12months! 17million! – that is more than the size of the population living in Himachal Pradesh, Tripura, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland and Goa put together!
Going ahead, I see more services being delivered over tablets [like Zomato – already doing that], and this will actually contribute to making tablets stay as a form factor forever. And with respect to TripAdvisor, its brilliant move but they should work towards being available over Android as well.
