Enclosed below are 4 very interesting
stories that are instances where employees were fired because of their
callousness and/or carelessness whilst using social media. It serves as a great
lesson for Indian employers and employees.
The Cisco case
When 22 year old Connor Riley
was offered a job at Cisco, she tweeted, "Cisco just offered me a job! Now i have to weigh the utility of a fatty
paycheck against the daily commute to San Jose and hating the work."
Someone at the company read the tweet and Connor's job was offer was withdrawn.
"We here at Cisco are versed in the
web" was the response Connor received to her tweet.
The Dominos case - Video
Prank at Dominos Taints Brand
Michael
Setzer and Kristy Hammonds, workers at Dominos Pizza, in Conover, North
Carolina, filmed disgusting pranks in the kitchen's restaurant and posted them
on YouTube. The film was made while they were at work.
The
video showed Michael, "wiping his bare butt with a sponge he then uses to
wipe a pizza pan, farting on pepperoni and stuffing cheese up his
nose...". Kristy then narrated "In
about 5 minutes it'll be sent out on delivery where somebody will be eating
these..."
The
restaurant was forced to close due to the videos and the overall brand was
damaged. Within days the video scored over a million hits and the video
appeared in the top searches on Google, as anyone searched for Dominos. The
film makers were fired and indicted with felony charges of distributing
prohibited foods, even though they claimed the food was never served.
The
Frustrated teacher case
In
Pennsylvania, it was a teacher who's Facebook frustrations, came back to haunt
her. Associate Professor Gloria Gadsden of East Stroudsberg University was
suspended for status updates that she posed on Facebook. One post read, "Had a good day today, didn't want to kill
event one student. :) Now Friday was a different story." A second post
read: “Does anyone know where i can find
a discreet hitman? Yes, its been that kind of day."
Even
though Gloria had initially set up her page as private and hadn't friended any
students, her posts had become public without her knowledge after Facebook
changed its privacy settings in December 2009. After a student reported the
comments to school administration, the school suspended the professor for
a month and forced her to undergo a psychological evaluation before returning
to work.
The
Police Office case
Trey
Economidy was an Albuquerque cop whose Facebook profile described his
occupation as "human waste disposal". His profile was private, but a
change in Facebook policy made the identity of his employer public. While on
duty Economidy was involved in the fatal shooting of a suspect. Afterward, a
local TV station disclosed his profile. Economidy was given desk duty and the
Albuquerque Police Department rolled out a new social networking policy for
officers.
