Sony Xperia U - Beauty with Brains

First Impressions
The Xperia U is a head turner! If I were in a meeting or at a mall and i saw it in someone's hand, i would surely give it a second look. And this is one of the toughest tasks for phone manufacturers these days! The iPhone and Samsung's are so common that, the Xperia series (along with the Lumia 800 for me) are 2 definite head turners in the market today.

The Illuminating Translucent Strip
The illuminating translucent strip along the bottom of the device is obviously one stand out feature. The strip starts to emit different colors as you browse through music and change themes. It also changes its color automatically in accordance with the shades in your pictures, when viewing them. This is one feature that gives the phone a very youth appeal. A lot of manufacturers and phones try to be mix and match between business-cum-fun-cum-everything else, but the Xperia U has youth written all over it.

The Exchangeable Bottom Cap
The phone's exchangeable bottom cap reiterates its youth appeal. Many people i showed the phone to didn't like the bright colors and this exchangeable bottoms concept, but i think it’s quite cool. For the primary target audience, i think it re-kindles that old world charm when you changed your feature phone panels and covers. It helps keep the users interest in the phone alive over a greater period of time, as he has one more, bright and fun nuance to fiddle with.

Display
The phone encases a 3.5-inch reality display with Mobile Bravia engine, with a resolution of 854x480 pixels. And the screen is also scratch-resistant. The colors are really crisp and sharp, thanks to its reality display with mobile Bravia engine.

Performance
The phone runs Android 2.3 operating system (upgradable to Android 4 Ice cream sandwich). The user interface is pretty intuitive, engaging and fluid. The phone comes powered by a powerful 1 GHz dual core processor, which gave me a smooth browsing and app experience. The speed in scrolling and rendering was all good.

Camera
The phone sports a 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash and 16x digital zoom. It offers various options including portrait, landscape, night scene, beach and snow, sports and party to customize images. The colors may appear a bit over saturated, but otherwise the camera works very well

SOME THINGS I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE IN THE PHONE ARE:
The width of the phone could have been increased a bit - I say this because, this phone will be eyed by a lot of first time real smart phone buyers, and for them, the touch feature of these touch screen phones remains an apprehension. This would also have helped the increase in comfort while typing on the keyboard in the vertical position

The plastics could have been stronger – the plastic body of the phone is delicate. There was a constant fear that if this phone falls down by mistake, unlike a Samsung Galaxy or an iPhone, it’ll sure crack

Non-expandable memory – This really should have been there

VERDICT:
The Xperia U is a good phone available at a price point of Rs16499/-. Having a non-expandable memory is a major bummer, but otherwise it has a great combo of beauty with brains going for it.
