Analysis of Pakistan-India Social Media Mela | Held on July 13-14th, 2012

Firstly, I was very surprised when I heard this, but both the countries actually got together for a session on social media and that in itself shows the impact that this new form of media is having on our lives.

The event was the Pakistan – India Social Media Mela, held on July 13th and 14th in Karachi. The event was aimed to bring together some of the finest minds in social media for a two-day extravaganza that nurtures dialogue, thought leadership, and critical engagement with entrepreneurs, journalists, activists, and creative professionals from Pakistan, India and beyond.

The event was supposed to see Barkha Dutt, Managing Editor of NDTV 24/7, from India speak on atleast a couple of sessions such as ‘The promise and perils of social media’ and ‘Pakistan and India: Bridging the trust Deficit’, however she couldn’t make it since she didn’t get her visa on time.

Among the many themes that the event covered, the 2 that were interesting to me are as follows:

Social media is going to have a huge impact in rural areas
This was a statement made by someone at the event, and published by the Express Tribune, which was very surprising again. The way I see it, social media or Facebook or Twitter, is something very far off for the people from the rural areas of India to leverage in any way. We’re a country, the rural areas of which, are still struggling to get things like clean water and to think that social media can cure this in any way is a long shot.

Corporate Blogger Meet ups: Building or Buying Loyalty?
This was very interesting to me because a conversation about this section of online influencers, at that level, shows the impact the blogger community is making. It also hints at the fact that, if today companies mostly in the technology space are targeting bloggers, companies from all other industries will also follow suit very soon. And looking at the market scenario, it is already happening.

  1. Hi Lonnie Charles thanks for an informative article. Situation should be changed, both India and Pakistan can work together and can solve any issues. Here is an example: https://www.mycomuniti.com/group/india-with-pakistan
