11 rules to follow while making a Powerpoint presentation

I am always highly irritated when someone is peeping into his own laptop while another person is making a presentation or when someone is such a great orator but doesn’t have the deck to back it up. So I thought to myself, ‘if I am such an expert, why don’t I list down few must have’s/ to do’s in a presentation.’ So here it goes.

11 simple rules that should be followed while making a Powerpoint presentation:

- Use less text, more pictures. This makes the deck look neater and more attractive
- In case you’re using office 2007, please use Smartart [this is an option under the ‘insert’ tab in the top menu] It makes the deck look a lot cleaner and neater. It also helps reducing text by making graphical representations
- In case a particular slide has less content to put in, do not increase the font size! It makes the deck look very amateurish
 - In case you put in any data in your presentation, do mention the source at the bottom of the slide
- Each slide should represent only 1 thought/ 1 idea/ 1 suggestion. This helps in delivering the message across to the listener in a better way
- For your deck to look professional, do not use to many colors in it. Stick to 1 color combination
- Use custom animation. This helps in bring a lot of drama to your deck
- Justify. In case you’re using Office 2007, use the ‘justify option to align all the text together
- Put questions in your deck to be asked to your audience to make the presentation more interactive
- Format the deck well. Formatting is a very tedious task but a very crucial one. Template, colors, font and font size on all slides should be the same
- Arrange the slides in the deck as per the thought process to deliver the message in the right manner in the right sense

These are only simple rules that I have listed down but the fact is, the best of us forget the basic rules and that’s the reason I have listed them down. If even one point from the list above helps even one person I think my job/ intension here is done/ achieved.
