Hypothetically, if Google or Facebook were to shut shop in your city today, would you consider shifting cities?

Yesterday morning as we had a lead Product Specialist from Google, Sohail Ahuja, address us in our regular training session at 20:20 MSL and while he was sharing insights into the state of the internet, the future of the cloud and cool products from Google, my mind wandered on a thought in parallel.

“Hypothetically, if Google or Facebook were to shut shop in your city today, would you consider shifting cities?”

Life today is totally unimaginable without Google and the future is certainly going to make us more reliant on it. We constantly talk about the success of Facebook and by all means it’s worth all the share of voice it attracts, but then a careful study of the moves Google’s gradually making, will make us realize that Google is actually all around us – in our computers, our tablets, our phones, our TV’s, mobile payments, music and even in our homes by their claims made at the I/O conference in San Francisco in early May 2011. And this is just today, imagine the possibilities of the future!

Comparing it with Facebook, the way I see it is – people/ brands may find it difficult to live without Facebook, but people/ brands for sure cannot live without Google. While Facebook has wound us up in a web where we get to interact with the world, they’re up against the entire gigantic ecosystem of Google. To get into a deeper analysis of Google Vs Facebook, you could watch the video below which is a thorough analysis done by CNBC:

For me, I would actually say, yes, I will shift cities if Google were to hypothetically shut shop in my city whereas I would not shift for Facebook.  The prime reason I say this is because, among all other things, Google adds to my productivity and it sure does to millions of people. And productivity alone is a big enough factor for me to make the switch. It’ll be great to hear your take on this question, would you shift cities for Google or Facebook?
