As per Morgan Stanley, the number of internet
connected mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, will exceed the
number of desktop and laptop PC’s in use in 2013. iDate, a consultancy, reckons
that the number of people accessing the internet via mobile devices will overtake
the number using fixed line connections by 2014. Mobile devices now account for
12% of global internet traffic up from just 1% in 2009. In India, however,
internet access from mobile devices (52%) has already exceeded that from
desktop internet (48%). This is changing the technology industry and would have
an obvious impact on India.
Enclosed below is a brilliant video (Source: The
Economist) that captures the same information mentioned above and much
more. I call it brilliant because it’s the first ‘videographic’ i’ve ever seen
or rather the first time I’ve seen video
that totally does justice to this ‘videographic’ term.
On
a global level, I think this is surely a trend that could emerge in the next
year, but in India I have my doubts if this will indeed have a similar impact
in 2013. I think the India market just isn’t as mature yet, to graduate to the
level that marketers start investing heavily in mobile advertising. The numbers
(to define the opportunity size) don’t match up to global levels as of now. What are your thoughts with respect to the
same?
