By 2020, the need for social media experts, amongst big organizations, will diminish


The current need from big organizations to hire social media experts is best explained by Anthony DeRosaReuters Social Media Editor when he says, "there is a big need for companies to understand how to use social media in a smart way. Most don’t really understand the proper use of the medium and are looking for folks to help them teach people across the company how. I don’t think a single person or even a team of people can be specifically focused on social, it’s more about that person trying to train the company as a whole how to use it individually and integrate it into each person’s role within the company."

Other than perspectives like the one above, there are sufficient statistics to prove that the importance of social media will increase and so will the adoption by companies big and small. But having said that, enclosed below are the reasons on which i base my prediction that by 2020 the need from big organizations for social media experts will diminish.

1. After plotting the social media understanding and adoption on the technology adoption lifecycle, i say that by 2020 big companies would have understood the importance of social media. They would have even firmed up their social media policies for their company and/ or atleast figured out their stand on it. 

2. The existing social media experts would have provided sufficient training to all present in the company. [this would and should be a part of the deliverables for these experts] Social media presence of the organization and of individuals would have been secured to the extent possible. 

3. The current young urban professionals who have already latched on to social media, in the 20-30 age group, would be in their 28-38 age group and would have taken up senior management positions. Hence improving the number of the organization's social media ambassadors. 

4. Social media would have been embedded in their organizational processes, functions, inititives and this would see the rise in demand of online experts again, reminiscent to the pre-social media online importance era. 

5. Social media understanding is already an expertise mentioned in the desired skill sets for every marketing vacancy. By 2020, social media understanding will move on from being a desirable trait, to a necessity. It will be a part of the functions of the marketing manager, just like radio and television is.
