Now everyone’s a competitor in the IT industry or so it seems. If you keep a constant eye on the latest happenings in the PC & telecom industry, one can’t help but wonder – have the days of specialization passed us by? Google’s come out with Nexus One, Android mobile OS, GO programming language, its browser Chrome & also its Chrome OS. It’s also apparently working on an ebook reader. And how can I forget the Google TV! Dell’s come out with its smartphone Streak. Also, it has now changed its focus from just products to solutions. Nokia in partnership with Intel has come out with its OS MeeGo. Nokia has also its own netbooks. Intel, by virtue of an extended portfolio, is now positioning itself as a ‘computing company’. Microsoft & Asus are working to come out with their own tablets. HP, post acquisition of Palm, is rumored to use the Palm OS for its slate.
Never before have so many players in the IT industry diversified into such unrelated, unchartered territories. The reasons for this may be the spread of internet across multiple devices, companies dipping their fingers in newer areas so that they don’t miss out on the next wave of revenue generators for this century, enhanced mobility, increase in demand for newer better products & want of solutions instead of just products. But what this diversification has ensured is that there is only one wide red ocean out there & while it’s all good for consumers – all IT players/ vendors/ companies will have to be on their toes, as only the best will survive.
