So Linkedin has over the past couple of days announced
that it plans to integrate its service with Microsoft's Outlook email client.
The company has been working closely with Microsoft to create a plug-in that
will tie contacts from Linkedin to Microsoft's Outlook email client.
David
Breger, a product manager at Linkedin said the next version of Microsoft
Office will have the Linkedin plug-in installed by default. What this means for
Outlook users is that, users will have to login once with their Linkedin
account details and will then be able to see profile information within
Outlook. Information from Linkedin will also be displayed on People Cards,
which Microsoft is touting as a new feature in its upcoming version of Office.
Earlier too Linkedin could have been synched to
Outlook via the Outlook Social Connector, but now no download we be required.
It will become standard Outlook functionality.
My Perspective
to the announcement:
1. I think this would be very cool enhancement to
Outlook. Professionals across several industries regularly access Linkedin to
check the professional credentials of a person before establishing an email
connect and this is another one of those ‘small change-big benefit’ moves.
2. While there is a small movement/ perspective that
email is dying, the fact is that professional communication still cannot be
done any better than on an Outlook
client. Microsoft seems to have found a way that would provide the best of both
world’s to the above email-dying argument.
3. They’re focusing on the social aspect of working
online and allowing users to collaborate in a way they are now familiar with
due to the popularity of social networks.
Did not know that you blog too... Very informative it is, especially for me ..love to explore new faces of technology !
