Impact from a camera manufacturer's point of
view
If/ when Nikon comes out with this camera, it’s
going to have a huge first mover advantage over others. There may already be
some local cameras with Android available today, but this could be first one
from a big brand. It’s also going to be a big pull for consumers; the same ones
who’re confused if they should buy a mobile phone like a Nokia PureView or a
camera. Other manufacturers will also soon leap on to this opportunity, but
irrespective of that Nikon will be remembered for building this market. Manufacturers
may also then explore the possibility of bundling with other operating systems.
If consumers accept this product, we could see the display sizes of all such
cameras be extended to the complete back size; and for all we know, such devices
may also be optimized for calling!
Impact from the App
makers point of view
Instagram today has 80
million users and is touted to reach a 100 million by 'early fall'. Despite until recently being available only on iOS, it has
racked up more than 10,000,000 installs on Android in just a few months. Imagine the impact
Instagram would have, in terms of the number of users, when the Nikon camera is
out. Apps are already becoming the competitive differentiators between mobile
phones, and this camera would mean, that apps will become a differentiator in
the camera market as well. We would also see more visual apps, if this/ such
products come out. With such expansion in user base, the pressure for such apps
to monetize the growth will also be more.
Impact from a Marketers point of view
Marketers would need to be more focused on visuals and have a
communications and brand promotion psyche too that’s more visual. I had already
elaborated on the Visual
Economy we’re living in today, and marketers would just need to acclimatize
to it.
Impact from a Consumers
point of view
Techies may love this, but photography enthusiasts
may totally love or hate this. Love this because the possibilities with the Android
camera, with Google Play support, are immense. This also goes in favor of the global
sharing culture that has emerged. Hate this because the OS with apps will sort
of bring in a degree of automation that could alienate from the old world charm
of clicking pictures with all the settings on a camera nob. This Nikon camera will
also need to carefully look at the features V.s pricing of its competitors, matching
against its value proposition, to appeal the most to consumers.
