6 Tweeting Tips - ‘What Not To Tweet About’

Tweeting is no rocket science, but there are certain things you should refrain from doing. Here go my 6 tips on ‘what not to tweet about’:

1. Do not re-tweet without adding your comments
Tweets are like headlines; they are extremely personal and reflect ‘you – the brand’ and no good brand copies each other’s brand messages, now do they!

2. Tweet in a manner that doesn’t always disclose your location and where about at different times of a day
Watchin Dum Maro Dum at Citywalk’… ‘lookin fwd to lunch at Punjab Grill, Saket’… ‘watchin #IndVsSl cricket final at Howzzat; amazing ambience’; You may be a very frank and transparent person but disclosing your location at every point of a day isn’t very good. Technology is a double edged sword and you never know when someone logs on to twitter to stalk you! Don’t get me wrong here, occasional mentions of location and occasional days when you have some extraordinary meetings/occasions from where you tweet about your locations is ok; but this should not to be made into a habit.

3. Don’t always just tweet about news – make your tweets individualistic
When you’re on twitter, think of yourself as a brand. Now like how brands don’t always just talk/tweet about their tag line; they talk about interesting stuff that makes you react and converse. Similarly, make your tweets interesting and little personalized headlines.

4. Don’t let your wild side out on twitter as well
Every person has a grey side to him/her but twitter is not the space to let it out. Some people track your tweets to know more about you – your employers, prospective employers, interviewers, you bosses, your customers/clients etc. to list a few. You never know, you may be asked a question on the expert advice or overt criticism you may have shed, in your job interview tomorrow!

5. Do not tweet stuff that you would never read if others would have tweeted
For e.g. I’ve seen tweets like “tired after a whole day’s work”; and am sure each and one of you who’re reading this post would agree that you’ve seen such posts. Please do not tweet such open ended, non-opinionated, non-newsy and non-beneficial statements. No one appreciates them and it’s only out of courtesy that no one has pointed it out yet.

6. Do not re-tweet without opening the links present in the tweet
Many a times the links in a tweet don’t work or the links are not related to the tweets or the links may lead to a porn site or it’s a sales pitch - your influence and credibility diminishes in my opinion.

These are just 6 tips from my end but I am sure all of you have some advice to give to the tweeting world out there. Please leave your tips in the comments below and we could chat about them.
